2017 – LOYALIST LAKEVIEW RESORT
Katharine MacDonald is a Master’s student, freelance researcher and writer, and entrepreneur, living in Charlottetown, PEI. Since finishing her BA at UPEI in 2012, her research has focused on young Islanders, including youth outmigration and return migration, youth unemployment and underemployment, and retention and repatriation. She has performed research, mostly about the province’s youth, for nonprofits and charities, off-Island universities, government, and national research institutes. Her Master of Arts in Island Studies thesis focuses on the experiences of young Islanders who move back to the province after living ‘away.’
Katharine has also owned a small business selling vintage items for several years. In the summers, she runs a small vintage shop in Murray River, PEI. Some of her research has centered around youth retention and rurality, and so owning a small business in a rural community has been good experiential learning and pushed her to examine the role of young people in rural economic development. Most recently, she has worked with the province’s SYnC program to develop and deliver a new internship that supports young women exploring entrepreneurship as a career path. Through that program, Katharine and her interns opened a “pop-up shop” in the Confederation Court Mall in March with much success, and she hopes to continue the dialogue it started about the access to affordable spaces for young aspiring entrepreneurs.
In 2017, she looks forward to opening her shop for its fourth summer season, making progress on her thesis research, and continuing to work to make PEI a great place for young people to live.
